SEMINAR
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
We are inviting highly respected speakers to give keynote speech for the event. The online keynote sessions will cover thought-provoking topics from several different branches of psychology:
What the Covid-19 Pandemic has Taught Us about Grief (Prof. Lauren Breen, Curtin University, Australia)
Dealing with the loss of a family member or close friend at any time is distressing. Losing a loved one from any cause during the Covid-19 pandemic may bring additional challenges. While every person’s experience of grief or loss is unique, an understanding of this process may be beneficial to improve access to bereavement support for people during pandemics.
Risk and Protective Factors of Mental Disorders (Assistant Prof. Frauke Schultze-Lutter, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Germany)
For a long time, psychiatric-psychological research has focused primarily on mental illnesses and their risk factors, but resilience, protective factors and well-being are currently increasingly the focus of attention in positive psychology and psychiatry and have become ever more important during the unprecedented changes that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought about. However, although these concepts are currently ubiquitous, there are still many unanswered questions about how they are defined, captured, and promoted. Recent findings suggest that resilience is a dynamic process of adaptation to chronic stressors or potentially traumatic experiences, the outcome of which depends on a person’s protective and risk factors. In this context, resilience should be understood as a multidimensional construct that can take on different manifestations across the lifespan and depending on the life domain and stressor. Initial intervention studies to promote resilience in children and adolescents therefore aimed to improve selected personal (assets) and environmental protective factors (resources) and yielded positive effects on psychological symptomatology immediately after the intervention. The concept of well-being is often considered as an indicator or part of resilience because of the clear conceptual overlap with the concept of resilience, although a universal definition is also lacking for this. The presentation will provide an overview of the constructs of resilience and wellbeing and their relationship with risk factors, including the loss of loved ones, drastic habitual changes, and marital failures due to financial problems.
Strengthening Psychosocial Aspects of Community Recovery from the Covid-19 Pandemic (Prof. Dr. Suryanto, M.Si., Psikolog, Universitas Airlangga, Indonesia)
Vulnerable communities in many countries are the most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. When insufficient food supply, financial challenges, health risk, and other issues during the pandemic pose threat to mental health in these communities, building and strengthening resilience are an important endeavor to minimize the impact of the pandemic and to mitigate the effects of any other disasters that might come our way in the future.
Industrial and Organizational Psychology (Prof. Dr. Siti Aisyah Panatik Abdul Rahman, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Malaysia)
The Covid-19 pandemic has affected industries and organizations in many different ways. Work culture might represent the area with the most drastic change as people have been forced to work from their home for around two years since the pandemic started. With many organizations transitioning back to working from office, the question remains on how the pandemic has shape organizational cultures and whether or not the changes are reversible.
The Power of Student Belonging (Associate Prof. Kelly-Ann Allen, Monash University, Australia)
Belonging was identified as a fundamental human need and a major motivator of human behavior nearly three decades ago, yet much work continues today to understand it’s meaning and purpose in our lives as well as its drivers, and outcomes. Debate exists, at a theoretical and empirical level, about how belonging should be defined, which leads researchers to question what belonging actually means to the general population and especially young people. This is particularly relevant when schools offer an opportune place of belonging for youth, yet international research inform us that a vast majority of students don’t feel a sense of belonging to school. This talk will discuss belonging, and school belonging more specifically. It will step through how belonging and school belonging has been defined and conceptualized, discuss the latest research concerning problems and benefits, and present systemic solutions and strategies for school that directly draw from student perspective.
